Dashcam Installation Options
We offer multiple options for the installation of your dashcam, depending on the camera:
The ignition feed option – Our recommended installation method
This method has some key benefits and considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, it’s important to note that the Parking Mode feature won’t work with this option, as the dash cam battery only acts as a backup in case of momentary power loss or for a safe shut down when power is no longer supplied.
This option is ideal for cars that are not driven daily or left for an extended period of time. Our installation team prefers this option as it helps to prevent any potential issues with vehicle battery drainage. With the switched ignition feed option, your dash cam will automatically turn on and off with your vehicle’s ignition. This means that no extra power will be taken from your car when the ignition is turned off, making it a great option for those who want to conserve their car’s battery life.
The Switched Live Option
The Permanent Live option enables recording when your vehicle is off. Permanent live dash cam installation has several important considerations. It requires the Parking Mode feature to be enabled on the dashcam.
G Force Sensor
With the feature activated, the dash cam will wake up and start recording if it detects a knock. If your car is bumped and the G Force sensor registers movement, the dashcam automatically switches on, records for some time, and then shuts down again. This means it would miss the actual event but capture the seconds after the bump. The dash cam will not be constantly recording and would need a physical knock before it starts to record again. It means that the camera is drawing significantly less power as only the G sensor circuit is live.
Constant Recording
On the other hand, some cameras with parking mode are constantly recording when the vehicle is turned off and require battery drain protection. If your car is bumped, the camera will automatically save 5 seconds before and up to 55 seconds after the event, capturing the whole incident.
The cut off voltage will vary across different cameras. The parking mode option consumes power from the vehicle’s battery, which could potentially cause issues if the battery is weak or left unused for long periods. When the battery reaches the set cut off voltage, it will cut power to the dash cam.
If the vehicle is in daily use and the battery health is good, the potential battery drain issues are unlikely to occur. Another way of overcoming battery drain with the main vehicle battery is to use a secondary polymer lithium-ion battery, so the camera is always powered via this secondary battery which is trickle charged whilst driving. This means that main vehicle battery is never affected with battery drain issues associated with the camera. The camera will remain active all the time there is sufficient charge in the secondary battery. We’re always happy to discuss the various options and help you decide what’s best for your needs.
